A charrette is a Scottish Government sponsored approach for involving the community in planning the future of where they live.
Working with teams of architects, engineers and traffic experts, WAVEparticle has helped in the delivery of sixteen charrettes over the last few years, including: South West Johnstone, Elgin, Clydebank, Greenock, Port Glasgow, Whitburn, Govan & Partick, Priesthill & Househillwood, Arbroath, Montrose, Kirriemuir, Monifieth, the Crinan Corridor and Dunoon.
Throughout the charrette process, the team from WAVEparticle successfully uses a combination of creative, innovative and fun engagement tools, including Large Vinyl Maps, Postcards From The Future, Fortune Tellers, Futurewalks, Gazebo Days, the Vernacular Map, the Pecha Kucha and Film, which we combine with ‘we consult anywhere’ tactics. We go out and about onto the streets, everywhere from shopping centres and supermarkets, to village halls, train stations & ferry terminals. This allows us to speak to, meet with and involve as many people as possible in the plans for the future of their area and to make sure their voices are represented.

Large Vinyl Map of the Area
The local community, everyone from schoolchildren to local residents, works from a large 3.5x 3m big floor map of the area and uses this to identify the places that they love in the area, places that are historically significant, and places they aren’t too keen on or which need improvement, using gold stars and red dots.
--------------------------------------------------
Postcard From The Future
The local community, everyone from schoolchildren to local residents, write back to themselves from 10 years in the future, detailing how the area has changed or what their aspirations for the area would be – what changes they would like to see 10 years from now!
--------------------------------------------------
Short Film
Captures a panorama of portraits of and comments from the community. The film is shown at the charrette, reflecting back to the community what they have said, with a focus on the present and the future of their area..
--------------------------------------------------
The Teller
Based on the old-fashioned fortune tellers that children make, this is a fun, creative engagement tool that works particularly well with schoolchildren.
--------------------------------------------------
The Future Walk
An opportunity for local people to take a walk into the future - in and around their town, thinking about the rich history of the area, unearthing forgotten treasures and looking back through time to help frame the present and imagine what the future might hold.
--------------------------------------------------
Gazebo Day
This aims to involve people who might not normally have the time to come to a charrette event in a town hall, and allows them to complete and return Postcards / questionnaires to ensure their voices are heard.

Pecha Kucha
Is a series of energetic presentations which focus on community issues and achievements. As an event, it showcases a diverse range of community interests and organisations. The format of the Pecha Kucha is really flexible and active; it involves a series of quickfire presentations in which each speaker talks through 10 slides, for only 20 seconds per slide. This is a really fun and innovative way to get to the heart of a topic. Our previous Pecha Kuchas have involved musicians, longsword demonstrations, heritage projects, community interest groups and local heroes!
